Uncommon Thinking for Uncommon Results: Mindset for Small Business Growth

Most small business owners start with a dream. The freedom to be their own boss, live life on their terms, and do work that matters. Yet according to the SBA, nearly 70% of small businesses don’t make it past ten years, and most failures come from cash flow challenges. The truth is, it’s not always about sales or effort. Often, it’s about mindset.

Mindset for Small Business Growth: Why It Matters

I learned this the hard way. About six years ago, I was running hard on the hustle treadmill, saying yes to everything, grinding until late at night, and convincing myself that busyness equaled progress. It didn’t. That path nearly burned me out and put me in the hospital in 2018. I had a wake-up call and knew I had to choose a different way. That’s when I decided to take a completely different path. I stopped running on the treadmill of “common” thinking and wrote my book, built Our Success Group, and now keep one goal in mind. Helping other business owners fall back in love with what they get to do.

What I discovered is what I now call the Uncommon Mindset. It’s not about doing more. It’s about building a business that isn’t just profitable, but enjoyable, based on some simple contrarian thinking.

Purpose & Belief: Start With Your Why

Most entrepreneurs set out to make money, and of course, profit is essential. But when money is the only goal, the work quickly loses meaning. You end up chasing sales instead of building something that matters.

The uncommon mindset says start with purpose. Why do you exist as a business? Who are you here to serve? When you’re clear on that, the money follows.

Belief is the second piece. Too many people operate with “fake it till you make it,” but that just covers doubt with a mask. The uncommon mindset is about deliberately building mental strength and choosing to believe in your success until it becomes reality.

And here’s a practical piece that many miss: stop hiding your goals. Don’t set vague, secret targets in case you fail. Pick one specific goal at a time and share it with others. Let people support you and hold you accountable. That kind of belief is contagious, and it accelerates results.

Relationships: Build Connections That Last

Business isn’t a solo sport. Yet many small business owners act like the only path to success is to be the lone wolf and do it all yourself. On top of that hindrance to success, they also believe their ideal customer is “anyone with a wallet.” That thinking spreads you too thin and drains your energy by overwhelming you from both sides.

The uncommon mindset says relationships are the real driver of success. That means choosing your customers intentionally. Who aligns with your brand? Who appreciates your unique value? Serve those people deeply and stop trying to please everyone else.

It also means investing in your team, whether that’s employees, contractors, or collaborators. People aren’t transactions. They’re partners in your vision. Treat them that way and they’ll invest in your success right back.

And don’t forget your personal support system. Running a business can feel isolating, but it doesn’t have to. Surround yourself with people who remind you why you started in the first place and who will tell you the truth when you need it most.

Numbers & Process: Clarity Beats Chaos

Here’s where many businesses quietly bleed out. They don’t know their numbers. Tell the truth. Do you know how much it costs you to be in business? If not that is OK, there is still hope, but you need to take action now.

Most business owners don’t know their numbers, therefore they have no sustainable pricing strategy. They set prices by copying competitors or guessing, but without understanding costs, margins, and cash flow, growth stalls.

The uncommon mindset takes a different approach. It says you can’t build long-term success until you know your exact costs and set a pricing strategy that’s tailored to your business.

And once you know your numbers, the next step is to look at your process. Common thinking says if you’re overwhelmed, the solution is to grind harder. But that just multiplies chaos.

Uncommon thinking says slow down to speed up. Map your workflows, eliminate the unnecessary, and focus on what really moves the needle. Progress doesn’t come from giant leaps; it comes from small, consistent actions that compound over time. Like compound interest, those daily actions add up in a way that hustle alone never can.

Resilience & Growth: Take Action Beyond Fear

Fear is universal in business. Fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of not being enough. But those fears are Fantasized Experiences Appearing Real.

The uncommon mindset isn’t about pretending fear doesn’t exist. It’s about moving forward anyway. Growth comes when you act in spite of fear, not in the absence of it.

Another big difference is how you handle results. Common thinking says to fixate on the end goal. Hold tight to the finish line and judge everything by whether you’ve arrived. But the uncommon mindset says detach from outcomes. Focus on the process, take consistent action, and trust that results will follow.

And if you really want to grow, seek feedback. Don’t run from it. Feedback isn’t failure, it’s a shortcut to getting better. The faster you make adjustments, the faster you move forward.

Ownership: 100% Responsibility, 0 Excuses

Here’s the toughest shift, but also the most freeing: taking full ownership. It’s easy to blame the economy, the competition, or circumstances you can’t control. But blame makes you powerless. The uncommon mindset says take 100% responsibility. Ask yourself, “How did I create, promote, or allow this?”

And along with responsibility comes eliminating “I can’t.” In my live sessions, I often ask people to write “I can’t” on a piece of paper, then crumple it up and throw it away. Because the truth is, a “I can’t” statement is really “I choose not to.” When you own that choice, you reclaim your power to change it.

How to Start Your Mindset Shift Today

These shifts are the most powerful, but they’re just the tip of the iceberg. There are dozens of ways to think differently, and many of them run against the grain of what most business advice tells you.

Contrarian thinking is one of my superpowers, and it’s how I help small business owners uncover opportunities they never saw before. Where the common mindset says “scale, hustle, grind,” I say “clarity, alignment, joy.” If you’re stuck, burned out, or just hungry for a business that feels like freedom again, you don’t have to figure it out alone. The uncommon mindset is a choice, and you can start today. Simple reach me at ConsultAaron.com
