Building a Business on Your SVPs: The Key to Fulfillment and Clarity

Building a business that you truly love begins with understanding and aligning with your “why.” It’s not just about making money, it’s about connecting with the deeper purpose behind why you started your business in the first place. As Simon Sinek says in his famous TED talk and book Start with Why, discovering your “why” is the key to everything.

For me, understanding my “why” wasn’t a lightbulb moment. It took years of questioning and reflection, until I finally realized: I was put on this earth with strengths, and I’m meant to use those strengths in a way that benefits others. The realization that it’s okay to have superpowers was incredibly freeing. I had spent so much time focusing on my weaknesses, but once I embraced my strengths, everything shifted. I began to realize I could build my business based on what I’m good at, not just on what I thought I should be doing.

The Power of Alignment for Clarity

When you are truly in alignment with your strengths, values, and passions (SVPs), decision-making becomes much easier. Instead of stressing over every choice, you simply ask, “Does this align with who I am and the business I want to create?” When you align with your purpose, you naturally gravitate toward opportunities that support your goals. No more second-guessing. No more wondering if you’re doing the right thing.

The key here is that clarity comes from alignment. When you’ve identified your SVPs you can clearly see your goals, make decisions quickly, and stop wasting energy trying to be something you’re not. You’ll find that the stress of running a business starts to melt away, and your path forward is more clear and direct.

Reframing Your Work: “Have-To” vs. “Get-To”

One powerful shift that I encourage every business owner to make is from a “have-to” mindset to a “get-to” mindset. Think about it. Instead of thinking, “I have to market my business,” reframe it as, “I get to share my expertise and build meaningful connections.” That simple shift turns a mundane task into an opportunity. When you do this, your work will feel more fulfilling, and you’ll find yourself enjoying the process rather than resenting it. When you enjoy the process, you are more efficient, effective and on target.

Finding Joy in the Day-to-Day: Reducing Burnout Through Passion

We’ve all been there—the hustle, the grind, the never-ending to-do list. It’s easy to feel burnt out when we’re constantly forcing ourselves to do things that drain us. But when you’re aligned with your passions, work doesn’t feel like a grind. It becomes joyful. Think about those times when you were “in the zone” and everything seemed to flow effortlessly. That’s passion at work. When you’re passionate about what you do, you’re not just crossing items off a list; you’re fulfilling a deeper purpose.

Of course, there will always be tasks you don’t love doing. But when those tasks are tied to your bigger purpose and aligned with your passion, they become more manageable. Your energy will flow differently, and you’ll feel more motivated to push through even the hardest parts of running your business.

The Power of Values-Driven Decisions

Operating outside of your values leads to what’s known as cognitive dissonance, where your actions and your inner beliefs are out of sync. That internal disconnect causes stress, anxiety, and burnout. Stress can manifest physically, with prolonged exposure leading to serious health problems like high blood pressure and heart disease.

That’s why aligning your business with your values isn’t just a nice idea—it’s crucial for your mental and physical well-being. When your business reflects what you truly value, you avoid the internal conflict that comes from doing things you don’t believe in. Whether it’s prioritizing honesty, transparency, creativity, or customer-first service, aligning your business with your values creates a sense of fulfillment and peace. And when your business operates from that place, it allows you to balance work and life, making time for what matters most.

Aligning Business Structures with Your Strengths

As you continue building a business you love, it’s important to align your tasks and responsibilities with your strengths. Ask yourself, Where do I shine? Focus your energy on those areas of the business that light you up and bring out your best. For tasks that drain you, delegate or outsource them. You can’t be everything to everyone, and trying to do it all will only lead to burnout.

A simple way to approach this is by making a list:

  • Strength-Aligned Tasks: These are areas where you thrive and bring value to your business.
  • Energy-Draining Tasks: These are the tasks that zap your energy and take away from the core of what you do.

Again this list categorization doesn’t mean there will not be some actions you are taking that don’t drain you a little. But when you know and focus on the aligned tasks the energy-draining ones will be more of a means to an end than a required drudgery. When you identify your strengths and structure your business around them, everything becomes easier, more efficient, and more fulfilling.

Building a Vision You Love

One of the most powerful things you can do for your business is to create a vision of your business when it is fully aligned with your SVPs. How is it operating day to day, who is involved, and how do you feel when your business is fully aligned with why you started it and the reason for becoming an entrepreneur? This vision will be the foundation of your entire strategy. It should excite you, inspire you, and feel true to who you are. When you define your vision with your strengths, values, and passions in mind, your decisions become much easier, and your actions more effective. This vision will act as a magnet pulling you towards it and attracting the people and resources you need.

In the Goal to Reality Webinar Series and Workshops, we dive deep into this concept. A strong vision, built on your true self, provides the clarity and motivation needed to keep moving forward, even when challenges arise.

Redefine Success on Your Own Terms

Success means something different for everyone. For some, it’s about growth and scaling their business; for others, it’s about achieving a work-life balance or embracing creative freedom. When you define success based on your strengths, values, and passions, you’re free from comparing yourself to others. Success becomes personal. And you’re no longer chasing someone else’s version of success; you’re creating your own.

Using Inspiration Strategically

While it’s great to be inspired by others, it’s important not to copy someone else’s path. Just because a competitor is succeeding with a certain strategy doesn’t mean it will work for you. Instead of focusing on what others are doing, focus on why they’re doing it. Use their journey to spark your creativity and generate ideas that align with your strengths and goals.

For example, if a competitor has a product bundle you admire, don’t copy it. Ask yourself, “How can I create something that’s unique to my strengths and serves my customers’ needs?” Inspiration should be used to fuel your own creativity, not as a prescription for success.
