Why It Matters, What Actually Counts, and How to Make It Work for You

Let’s be real for a second. Most business owners either think they don’t have time to make a business plan or they avoid it because they’re not sure how to do it “right.” I know because I have been there. But you’re not lazy, and you do know how to do it without realizing it. You’ve just been trying to build something important without the blueprint.

And that’s exactly what a business plan is. It’s not a stuffy document for banks or investors. It’s a tool to help you stay focused, avoid detours, and build a business that actually fits you.

Why a Business Plan Matters (Yes, Even for You)

Skipping the plan usually doesn’t feel like a big deal in the beginning. You’re busy and things are moving fast and you are saying yes to whatever comes your way. But here’s what happens without a plan: you waste time, lose money, take the wrong clients, burn out, and start wondering what happened to that excitement you had when you first got started. Sound familiar?

A business plan gives you space to think clearly. It’s your first creation of the business in your mind. Before you hustle your way into another project or pour money into a marketing idea, the plan lets you pause and ask, “Is this what I want to build?” Then it gives you a path to build it. You wouldn’t build a house without a blueprint. Why would you build a business without one?

And no, it doesn’t have to be complicated. It doesn’t even need to start with numbers. The numbers are just your measuring stick. The real plan is about being intentional and designing something that works for you.

What Actually Belongs in a Business Plan?

There are five pieces I believe every business plan should include. They don’t require fancy tools or a business degree. Just some honest reflection and a willingness to work on your business, not just in it.

  1. Your Goals (Goal-Getter)

Not vague stuff like “make more money.” I’m talking specific, meaningful goals you care about. Goals that energize you and give your day direction. You should be able to measure them and celebrate when you hit them. In your plan, you will map them out in as much detail as possible and set a road map for achieving those goals.

  1. The Relationships

Success is a team sport. Even if you plan to be a solopreneur forever, you will have others around you. Who do you want to work with? Who lights you up? Who drains your energy? This part is about defining your ideal partners and team.

  1. Marketing Groundwork

This doesn’t mean running ads or learning every social media trick. It has little to nothing to do with the strategies and more about the foundation your marketing will stand on. What is your brand and values, who are your ideal customers, and what are the products or services at the intersection of those two things?

  1. The Numbers Game

The numbers game is much simpler than you might realize. Leave the complicated numbers to the accountants, but for our plan and your business, it is crucial to first know your overhead, or at least a general idea of how much it will cost you to just be in business. Then, from there, you should map out a pricing strategy. The other number we sometimes forget is time. What is your time management plan?

  1. Your Systems (Systematic Processes)

How do things get done without you burning out? What steps repeat, and how can you systematize as much as possible? Your systems are what keep things running even when life throws a curveball, so have a plan.

How to Start (Without Getting Overwhelmed)

Notice what I didn’t list? A thick document no one reads. You’re building a guide that helps you stay clear, confident, and in control. Here’s my favorite part. We don’t start with spreadsheets or software. We start with your dream. What do you want your days to look like? What do you want to be known for? What kind of impact do you want to have?

When you start with your Strengths, Values, and Passions—your SVPs—you begin building a business around who you are. That dream becomes your compass, and your plan becomes the map.

This is exactly what we focus on in the Prepare portion of the FUNdamentals Formula and the FUNdamentals Biz Bootcamp. And it’s the heart of our upcoming Business Planning Webinar Series. We’ll walk through these five core pieces together so you can stop guessing and start building with purpose.

Use It and Keep It Alive

You don’t need to do this alone. You don’t need to do it perfectly. You just need to take the next step. Your plan isn’t something you finish and file away. It’s a living tool. You get to use it as often as you want. With a living plan like this, you will naturally start referring to it more. It becomes part of how you think and how you make decisions. You stop reacting and start choosing. That’s when things get fun again.
