Stop Comparing Your Business to Others
If your business feels heavy, chances are you’re carrying a pile of “shoulds.” I should be further along. I should be making more. I should be doing it like them. Those stories are exhausting, and they’re not the truth. The “shoulds” sound helpful, but really they’re just anchors keeping you from the kind of success that actually lasts.
Letting Go of “Should”: Redefining Success with Clarity and Intention
The more clear, focused, and intentional I become, the more I realize that success rarely looks like what it “should.” That word is slippery. It sneaks into our plans, our expectations, our calendars. It’s fueled by what others are doing, what culture calls normal, what we think we’re supposed to be chasing. The perfect income. The perfectly balanced calendar. The big milestone that proves we’ve arrived.
But in reality, all those “shoulds” just kept me distracted from what actually mattered. I remember seasons when I couldn’t even see the progress I’d made, because all I could notice was the gap between where I was and where I thought I should be. That gap drained my joy and made everything feel heavier than it needed to be.
And maybe you’ve wondered the same thing: How do I stop comparing my business to others? That single question has kept more entrepreneurs stuck than almost anything else I’ve seen. The answer begins with stepping away from “shoulds” and stepping into your own version of success.
Real Success Is Rarely Flashy
We love the idea of overnight success, but here’s the truth: what looks sudden on the outside is almost always the result of quiet, faithful work on the inside. Cameras show up after the success is visible, not before.
Long before there’s a stage or spotlight, success is waking up with more peace than pressure. It’s sitting down to dinner fully present with your family. It’s having enough space to hear from God and the clarity to act on what He’s whispering.
Those things don’t show up on a scoreboard, but they’re success. They’re what create sustainable growth, deep relationships, and work that fills you up instead of drains you. And ironically, when you live from that place of alignment, the “traditional” markers like income, growth, and recognition are byproducts of fulfilling success. And best of all, they don’t come with burnout. That’s what it looks like to redefine success in business without burnout.
Letting Go to Let God Lead
If you’re like most entrepreneurs, surrender doesn’t come naturally. We’re wired to push, to plan, to control. I’ve had to learn, often the hard way, that peace doesn’t show up through gripping tighter. It shows up through letting go. Letting go of the timeline. Letting go of the pressure. Letting go of the story that says your value is tied to hitting a number or landing a title.
Goals matter. Ambition matters. But they’re not the center of success, they’re just tools that help us take the next step. The real breakthrough happens when we release the “shoulds” and give God room to lead. That’s when we’re guided toward the people we’re meant to serve, the work we’re meant to do, and the person we’re meant to become.
And if you’re feeling stuck, this is where faith-based business coaching for entrepreneurs who feel stuck can help. Having someone to remind you of what matters, help you clear out the “shoulds,” and stay aligned with God’s calling can completely change the way you experience your business.
It’s not about playing small. It’s about playing true.
One Step Forward
So what does this look like in practice? Here’s what I’ve been working on.
Pause and reflect. Ask yourself: Who told me it needed to look this way? Why is that definitive, and what if it wasn’t true? Write it down if you have to. Then get quiet. Ask God what success looks like for you right now. His answer might surprise you.
When you hear it, trust that moving toward that version of success is enough. Success doesn’t live in the “shoulds.” It lives in the space where you choose peace over pressure and alignment over comparison. That’s where joy shows up. That’s where fulfillment grows. That’s where you experience the success God actually designed for you.
Living with an Uncommon Mindset
If you’re ready to live success on God’s terms instead of chasing someone else’s “shoulds,” here’s a simple path forward:
- Notice the Shoulds – Pay attention this week to when that word sneaks in. “I should be further.” “I should be doing it like them.” Write it down so you can see it for what it is.
- Release and Replace – Don’t just drop the “should.” Replace it with truth. Pray, journal, or declare: I am where I’m meant to be, and God is guiding my next step.
- Act in Alignment – Take one small step each day that reflects the success you want to live right now. Maybe that’s choosing peace over hustle, presence over distraction, or gratitude over comparison.
This is what living with an uncommon mindset looks like. It’s refusing to measure your worth by timelines or highlight reels. It’s building your business from a place of clarity, faith, and alignment.
And here’s the promise: uncommon mindsets create uncommon results. When you stop chasing “shoulds” and start following what God has placed in front of you, you’ll find more joy, more peace, and more fulfillment than the world’s version of success could ever offer.
So here’s my call to you: don’t just read this and nod along. Try it. Catch a “should” today, release it, and ask God what He’s inviting you into instead. Then take one faithful step in that direction.
Because when you stop chasing what you think it should look like, you finally start living the kind of success that actually lasts. And that’s the uncommon path worth walking.
