Can Gratitude Hold You Back in Business?

About a year ago, I heard something surprising to me: the idea that gratitude, while powerful, can sometimes hold us back. It made me stop and think. How could gratitude, something so positive, actually stop us from going after more in life, especially as business owners?

The Strength and Superpower of Gratitude

Gratitude has always been one of my strengths. I naturally lean into appreciation, always looking for the good in situations. I truly believe that gratitude is like a superpower. It’s how I see the world. But I’ve also realized that wanting more in life—setting new goals, learning, growing, and thriving—is not just okay; it’s necessary for business success. It’s not about settling because things are “good enough.” Sometimes, we need to add more to our lives and businesses to really make an impact.

Watch Out for Blind Spots: Balancing Gratitude with Growth

What I’ve learned is that we need to watch out for blind spots—those thoughts or habits that can get in the way of our strengths. As business owners, maybe we’re too quick to find the positive without fully dealing with the tough stuff that life throws at us. Recently, someone reminded me that real learning often comes from going through hard times, not just brushing them off with a positive attitude. It’s important to feel the discomfort, deal with the emotions, and then find gratitude for the lesson. See? I knew I could bring it back to something positive!

Learning and Growing Through Challenges

Over the years, especially in my work helping business owners, I’ve often said that wherever you are in life or business, it’s okay. We can’t change the past, but we can learn from it and see how it’s brought us to where we are now. The challenges and successes we face shape us into who we are today, giving us the knowledge and strength we need for what comes next in our business journey.

Embracing Your Unique Purpose as a Business Owner

I believe that each of us has a unique purpose, something that makes us special. As business owners, our purpose drives us to serve our customers better, come up with new ideas, and push ourselves out of our comfort zones. The real change happens when we find a balance between our strengths and weaknesses. By being aware of the tough stuff and finding the courage to face it, we grow in ways we never thought possible, both in life and in business.

Moving Forward: Using Gratitude as a Tool for Growth

So, while gratitude is a superpower, we can’t let it keep us from pushing forward in our business or life. Instead, we should use gratitude to create more abundance and positive energy in everything we do. And when challenges show up, let’s acknowledge them, learn from them, and be thankful for the chance to grow and make our businesses even better.

Balancing Gratitude with Ambition

By thinking this way, business owners can use gratitude to help them reach new levels of success, making sure they keep growing while staying grounded in appreciation. Let’s aim to balance our gratitude with our drive for growth, so our businesses and lives aren’t just “good enough,” but truly amazing.

Note from Aaron:

I so appreciate Kylene sharing this with us, as we can make a great yin and yang. She was missing the blind spot of too much gratitude while I tend to lean the other way and have a blind spot for being too driven, I realize how important it is for business owners like us to strike that delicate balance between gratitude and ambition. It’s easy to fall into the trap of feeling content with what we have, thinking we’ve reached a point where things are “good enough.” But I’ve come to understand that if we truly want to shine in our businesses and make a lasting impact, we can’t let gratitude become an excuse to settle.

In my own experience, I’ve seen that facing challenges head-on, rather than glossing over them with positivity, has been key to real growth. It’s about acknowledging the tough moments, learning from them, and then using gratitude to fuel our drive for more. As business owners, we have the power to create incredible things, and by balancing appreciation with a relentless pursuit of growth, we can achieve success that goes beyond just “good enough” and becomes truly extraordinary.

Thanks Kylene!
