If you are anything like most small business owners, there’s a good chance you’re easing back into “real life” with a full stomach, a full heart, and probably a full inbox. You’re opening your inbox, checking your messages, or scrolling on social media, and the noise of life comes rushing in. For years, I let that noise control everything. I thought stress was normal, frustration was expected, and being overwhelmed was just the price small business owners had to pay.
If you’re feeling that today, you’re not broken. You’re not behind. You’re not alone. You’re human.
And grateful or not, this season has a way of showing you what’s really going on inside your business and inside your heart.
I haven’t always been the guy who notices the good stuff. My natural wiring leans more toward spotting problems. I like to think of it as “useful awareness,” but my family might call it “grumpy old man energy.” I used to walk around ready for something to fall apart at any moment. When your brain gets too good at spotting what’s wrong, it can forget how to celebrate what’s right. It creates a loop that drains joy and steals hope. And that loop led me to the emergency room.
Somewhere in the middle of all that, thanks to my amazing wife, Kylene, gratitude started teaching me something that changed how I live and how I work. Gratitude doesn’t pretend everything is perfect. It simply refuses to let pain or pressure get the final word. It shifts the way you see your circumstances. And when you combine genuine gratitude with a business built in alignment with your strengths, values and passions, things feel very different.
Today I want to help you build more of that feeling.
Why So Many Owners End Up With a Business That Drains Them
Most people don’t intentionally build a business that exhausts them. It happens slowly. A decision made in the first six months shapes the next two years. An opportunity pops up and sounds good, even if it wasn’t meant for you. Someone you admire tells you “the way” to run your business, so you try to follow their system even though it never felt natural. And before you know it, you’ve built a business that looks nothing like the life you wanted.
When you’re out of alignment with your strengths, values, and passions, your business starts asking for things you were never designed to give. You might notice tension in your shoulders when you look at your schedule. You might find yourself avoiding emails or dreading customer messages. You might work harder than ever but see inconsistent progress because the structure underneath your business doesn’t match who you are.
Misalignment shows up as burnout.
It shows up as resentment.
It shows up as guilt.
It shows up as avoidance.
And it doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means your business needs to be realigned.
Gratitude helps you recognize this without shame. It shifts your focus long enough to see what’s true, not what your fear is shouting. It opens your eyes to the moments where God has already provided guidance, support, and clarity that you might have missed while running too fast.
Once you can see clearly, you can start building differently.
The Power of Alignment
Alignment is what happens when the activities you participate in match the person God created you to be. Your gifts. Your values. Your passions. Your purpose. When alignment is present, your business stops feeling chaotic and starts feeling meaningful.
Owners often think they need more discipline or more time or more motivation. What they really need is alignment.
When your strengths are ignored or out of balance, your day feels like a grind. When your values are ignored, you feel disconnected. When your passions are buried under obligations, you lose momentum. But the good news is you’re only a choice away from returning to alignment. That means you are also only a choice away from your business feeling like a calling again.
Gratitude helps you remember why you started. Alignment helps you build something worthy of where you want to go.
Building Capacity Without Burning Out
Capacity is your ability to show up well in all the areas that matter. It includes your energy, your time, your focus, your emotional reserves, and even your spiritual grounding. When you try to run a business that isn’t aligned with your life, your capacity drains faster than you can refill it.
This is why gratitude plays such an important role. It brings your attention back to the places where you’re already supported. It reminds you to pause and breathe. It reminds you to let go of things God never asked you to carry and that choice creates more capacity.
Owners who learn to protect their capacity create healthier businesses because they aren’t reacting all day. They’re choosing and then designing and ultimately building the business of their dreams. You deserve that!
Boundaries That Protect Your Purpose
If alignment keeps your business pointed in the right direction, boundaries keep it from drifting. A lot of owners struggle with boundaries because they feel guilty saying no. They worry they’ll disappoint someone or miss out on an opportunity. But boundaries aren’t walls to keep people out. They’re guide rails that help you stay aligned with your calling and they welcome the right people and opportunities in.
When you create boundaries around your time, your prices, your communication, and your availability, you stop carrying constant stress. You stop letting emergencies decide your day, and stop creating the kind of chaos that steals peace from your relationships.
Gratitude supports this by reminding you of what truly matters. When your heart is grounded in thankfulness, you make clearer decisions. You notice when a boundary needs to be strengthened. You honor your capacity instead of overextending it.
Why Copying Someone Else’s Plan Never Works
It’s easy to look at someone else’s business and think, “If I just did what they’re doing, maybe I’d finally get ahead.” But copying someone else’s model is like wearing someone else’s shoes. They might look great, but if they weren’t made for your feet, you’re going to end up with blisters.
Your business was never meant to follow someone else’s blueprint. You were created with a unique combination of strengths, values, and passions. When you ignore those and build according to someone else’s design, you disconnect from your purpose. That disconnection creates pressure which leads to misalignment and it creates overwhelm.
Gratitude reminds you that God crafted you intentionally. He didn’t make you or your story a copy. Your business is allowed to look different.
The Difference Between Building and Reacting
Many owners wake up each day trying to keep up with emails, orders, customer requests, content schedules, inventory issues, and surprise fires that weren’t on the list. The business takes control of the owner, not the other way around and they feel stuck in reacting instead of building.
Building is different, intentional and thoughtful. Building is grounded in clarity and gratitude. Working ON your business means you take control of the reins and begin creating momentum instead of chaos. Working ON your business gives you a sense of direction instead of a sense of panic.
Gratitude helps you slow down enough to build. It shifts your mind from “I have to do everything” to “I get to build something meaningful.” That shift changes everything.
Small Adjustments That Change Everything
At this point some of you are all in. Saying to yourself, “Aaron, I get it but what should I do? What will make the biggest impact in getting my time back?” So this is where we have to embrace our uncommon mindset. You might expect me to sell you on some week-long retreat where we break down everything, and completely start fresh. But the truth is, I’ve watched owners make adjustments that seemed tiny, yet the impact was huge. Things like:
- Changing their business hours and sticking to that change even in the face of pressure from customers who they thought were ideal. They realized those customers were actually not ideal as they didn’t have the same values, and the change removed those customers from the equation and they were able to protect their family time. And the bonus result or by product of this change that took no extra effort is that they now opened up space to work with more of their ideal customers and their business grew naturally.
- They raised prices so they could breathe. It only took a simple quick, no explanation needed for their ideal customers, increase, and those ideal customers shared “I was wondering when you were going to charge what you were worth?” If you raised your prices up to 20% the Pareto principle tells us the likelihood of you losing more than 20% of your customers is very low. Its probably lower than that. And the joyous by product is that those potential 20% you would lose are most likely the 20% that cause 80% of your customer service issues.
- They simplified their product line so their brain wasn’t juggling 42 different variations and they spent more time learning how to do the business instead of protecting that time to build their business. Even letting go of a service that steals your joy will be a chance you were glad you made in the long run. The fear of missing out will fade and the by-product of those choices will have a positive lasting impact.
Other small adjustments like setting up a clear workflow that saved hours each week or building a schedule that matched their natural energy, not someone else’s expectations, can make a huge difference. Each of these owners reached a point where they realized gratitude and alignment weren’t just spiritual ideas. They were real, practical tools for designing a business that fit their life.
And you can do the same. Clarity begins with gratitude and awareness. Awareness creates momentum. And when you combine that with support and accountability, everything starts to change.

A Reminder for the Journey Ahead
You don’t have to become a naturally grateful person to practice gratitude. I’m still learning it every day. You also don’t have to figure out your entire business overnight. You just need to take one honest step at a time.
Gratitude anchors your spirit.
Alignment shapes your path.
Intention builds your business.
And peace grows in the space where those three meet.
I know those business owners willing to think differently will give yourself permission to build with purpose, trust what God is doing in you, and create a business that truly fits you.
If you want help finding that clarity, I’d love to walk with you inside the Accelerator. You were never meant to build this alone.
