Discerning Truth From Lies in Your Inner Voice

Small business owners often carry more on the inside than people realize. Your customers see your smile. They see the finished work. They see your resilience. But inside, you may be carrying questions that never make it into the open. Am I making the right decisions? Why does this feel harder than it should? Will I ever feel confident in the direction I am taking?

These questions are completely normal. There is a quiet battle going on inside your inner voice. And that voice shapes everything you build. There is a great book by Robert Scheinfeld called “The 11th Element: The Key to Unlocking Your Master Blueprint For Wealth and Success.” It describes the 11th element as a sort of invisible network we can tap into through our inner CEO. The inner CEO guides you toward decisions that match your true blueprint. While he uses broad spiritual language, I believe that the inner CEO is God Himself. It is the voice that brings clarity, direction, and peace when your own thoughts feel scrambled. It is the voice that says, “This is the way, walk in it.”

And that voice never leads you with fear.

The First Step is Honest Evaluation

Growth cannot happen until you slow down enough to recognize which voice you are following. Every owner deals with two kinds of thoughts. One is steady, wise, hopeful, and grounded in truth. The other is frantic, confusing, anxiety or shame-filled. Our honest evaluation of which is which is the only way we can start lifting the veil to hear what God has for us.

This step is more practical than people expect. You literally pause when you feel stressed, overwhelmed, or reactive. You check the message running through your thoughts. You ask, “Is this the voice that leads me forward, or the one that pulls me into doubt?”

That small moment of awareness is where the inner CEO begins to speak. God steps into that pause. He brings clarity that pushes back against the old story you have carried. You start to sense the difference between what is aligned with who God created you to be and what is simply fear pretending to be wise.

This honest reflection is where repentance begins. You release the lie and make space for God’s voice to fill the gap.

Scripture Becomes Your Filter for Truth

There is no shortcut to discernment. When the noise is louder than the truth, no amount of discernment will matter. Every person has a filter for truth, whether they’ve named it or not. For some people, this looks like testing the thought against reality and values. Is this thought actually true? Is it helpful? Does it lead me toward clarity and growth, or toward stress and avoidance?

For me, I have found much of my truth in scripture, and it helps me keep my inner world anchored. It helps me recognize when a thought, belief, or fear does not match what God says about me.

Here are a few lies many business owners quietly wrestle with, and the truth that replaces them from scripture:

Lie: I am a failure and I can’t do anything right.
Truth: I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength, Philippians 4:13.

Lie: If God cared, He would make this easier.
Truth: God works all things together for His glory and my good. His grace is enough, and His power shines in my weakness, Romans 8:28 and 2 Corinthians 12:9.

Lie: I will always be this way.
Truth: I am a new creation in Christ. The old is gone, and the new has come, 2 Corinthians 5:17.

When you feed your heart with the truth and God’s Word, the lies lose their grip. You begin to hear your inner CEO with more clarity because you recognize the tone of God’s voice. His voice is always consistent. His voice always aligns with peace, wisdom, and purpose.

How the Inner CEO Guides Your Business

You are not meant to carry the full weight of every decision. You are the lighthouse or the vessel and there is always a truth there ready to guide you. That truth or God’s voice requires you to slow down and listen.

The inner CEO does not shout. He nudges, whispers, and reminds you of what is already true. He pulls your attention toward possibilities you had not noticed. He shows you gently how to make decisions from clarity instead of fear.

This guidance is not mystical or woo-woo. It is deeply practical and available to anyone who will choose to listen. Think about all the “coincidences’ in your life to this point. The truth I learned is that there is no such thing as a coincidence, just the time you actually saw your inner CEO at work. 

You feel it when you suddenly know which project to stop forcing. You feel it when a sense of peace replaces the panic in your chest. You feel it when a new idea arrives at what almost feels like the last possible second, but it just feels right, right now. You feel it when a problem loses its power because you see a path you could not see before, and the previous challenge is now because your new strategy for growth. This is alignment with your true blueprint.

A Simple Practice to Strengthen Discernment

As with all the FUNdamentals, talking about it and understanding it is only 2/3rd of the process. The final part of putting things into motion is the most crucial step. Here are 5 easy steps you can use immediately. It blends Scripture/truth, self-awareness, and the inner CEO concept into something small and powerful.

1. Notice the thought that rises when you feel unsure.
2. Ask, “Does this reflect God’s truth about me?”
3. Replace the lie with Scripture/truth that aligns with who you are becoming.
4. Pray or pause long enough to sense the peaceful nudge of the inner CEO. Even the slightest nudge, no matter how unsure, is worth leaning into.
5. Take one small action that matches the truth, not the fear.

This is how momentum begins. Not with a dramatic change. With small, aligned steps.

Your Business Grows When Your Mind Is Clear

When you learn to sort truth from distortion, you begin noticing which thoughts create confusion and which thoughts create direction. You start recognizing the moments when anxiety tries to take over and the moments when confidence begins to rise. Discernment gives every business owner, no matter their beliefs, a powerful advantage. It teaches you how to quiet the noise long enough to hear what is real. I believe it is God speaking to us, but the beautiful part is that everyone can experience this guidance in a way that fits their journey. What matters most is learning to recognize the voice that brings clarity, steadiness, and a sense of possibility. That voice helps you build your business into something you love getting to be a part of each day.

Your inner world is the engine of your business. And the more you practice this kind of discernment, the more natural it becomes. You will find yourself hearing guidance more quickly, recognizing truth more easily, and taking action with more confidence.
