Progress You Can See (and Stick With)
Let’s talk about accountability. Not the surface-level variety, but the real, meaningful accountability. Not the shame-filled, finger-wagging version. The kind that actually helps you grow a business you love without getting lost in guilt, perfection, or comparison.
This part of the FUNdamental Formula is about creating a structure that keeps your progress visible, your goals active, and your support team strong. It starts with being clear about what you said you’d do. It grows when you surround yourself with the right people. And it thrives when your support system is built on your Strengths, Values, and Passions (SVPs).
Your Success Team: Build It with Intention
You’re not meant to do this alone. I always say emphatically that success is a team sport. No one wins long-term in business without some kind of team. And I don’t just mean employees. I’m talking about the people you spend time with, the voices you listen to, and the energy you allow into your world. Are those people lifting you up or dragging you down? Are they motors or anchors?
Take a quick inventory. Look at the five people you spend the most time with each week. How do they show up in your life? Positive influence? Zero-sum distraction? Constant commiseration? This is where your environment shapes your outcomes.
When you choose to build a success team that reflects your SVPs, that means people who share similar values, energize your strengths and support your passions. When you connect that team to your SVPs, you create a foundation that actually helps you follow through. It doesn’t mean they have to think just like you, but they should respect what you stand for and push you forward.
Masterminds: The Real Kind, Not the Buzzword
A true mastermind group is one of the most powerful accountability tools on the planet. Not because everyone holds hands and sings motivational quotes. But because they commit to a common goal: honest growth, mutual support, and holding each other to the standards we say matter. But not everything labeled as a mastermind truly delivers on that promise.
The real magic happens when a mastermind is structured. That means a consistent schedule, a shared agenda, and people who show up ready to give and receive. Not just advice. Energy. Encouragement. Challenges. Clarity. All of it from a place of love and respect.
When you hear someone share a win, you believe more deeply in your own possibilities. When someone misses a goal, you learn from how they adjust. And when it’s your turn, you get perspective you never would’ve seen alone. But that perspective only comes when you show up fully first. You only get what you give, but the beauty is when you get ends up being 10 fold once you are all in.
Masterminds are not coaching programs in disguise. They’re not leader-dominated lectures. They’re circles of business owners committed to moving forward. If that sounds like the kind of momentum you need, make sure you’re part of a group that follows a proven format, not just a fancy name. We would love to have you check out the Masters of Success Program. Ask me for details.
You Are the Anchor and the Engine
Now let’s get real. The most important person in your accountability framework is you. It’s the version of you that commits to something and decides whether or not to follow through.
That’s why this section of the Formula isn’t called “get someone to babysit your to-do list.” Accountability isn’t about someone else holding you responsible. It’s about learning how to keep promises. The person you have let down the most in your life is always you. How many times have we said to ourselves things like, “Today is the day I start the diet”, or workout program, and then ended up on the couch eating an extra large bowl of ice cream with a mind-numbing television show on in the background? Is it only me? And each time we do that we let ourselves down killing our belief in our abilities.
But the good news is those things are not fatal or final. You will continue to do it, but when we build an accountability framework and structure to make changes to that story, we are building self-belief. Make sure to read FUNdamental #3 of The FUNdamentals of Business Success book for even more details on reigniting your self-trust.
So how do you track the things you said you’d do? How do you keep yourself from chasing every shiny idea that comes your way? How do you make space for the work that really matters? Start by writing it down. Based on our SVPs we should design a capture system. David Allen in his book, ‘Getting Things Done’, notes that we all need a capture system to collect all our tasks, ideas, and commitments in a trusted place outside our brain so nothing gets lost or forgotten. The goal is to clear mental clutter by getting everything out of your head and into a system where you can organize and act on it with clarity and focus when the time is right.
For me, I capture my commitments in a project management system called Asana and then weekly review and reflect on those commitments. What got done? What didn’t? What did you learn from that? Then adjust. Maybe you aimed too high. Maybe you let something urgent crowd out something important. That’s not failure. That’s feedback. That’s where growth lives.
Say yes to fewer things. Say no more often to the good stuff that pulls you away from the great stuff. And when you fall short, which you will, surround yourself with people who won’t let you wallow. People who say, “Okay, what’s the next step now?”
Set Yourself Up for Wins That Build
This is what a real accountability framework looks like. It’s not rigid. It’s not punishing. It’s supportive, flexible, honest, and focused on consistent action.
It’s a system you build from the inside out, based on your SVPs and your idea of success. It grows with the people you choose to walk alongside. And it stays alive through simple routines that keep you checking in, learning, and trying again.
You are the leader of your own progress. Own that role. Build the structure that helps you stay in motion. And if you’re ready to experience the kind of accountability that moves you from stuck to thriving, it is time to find your team and play full out.
